Curious how mold remediation works? Check out these details below.

What is Mold Remediation?

The best place to start is the basics. When you hear the term “remediation,” it might sound like it’s just cleaning up or removing mold. However, there is a bit more to the overall process. Remediation refers to the entire process of inspecting the area, creating a plan for removal, setup for removal, mold removal, and then cleaning and disinfecting when the restoration is complete.

The Mold Remediation Process

Every company that handles mold restoration and removal will have a different process. Some companies offer different services. While this covers our basic process, keep in mind that some companies do things differently.

Inspection & Planning

The first thing to do is inspect the area that has been affected by mold. For some companies, this process is simply to determine the type of mold and how extensive the mold damage might be. Other companies actually do complete inspections to determine if there is mold.

For the purpose of this guide, we’re assuming you recognize you have mold and you want to know the process for remediation. The affected area is inspected, the extent of damage is determined, and a plan is created to handle the mold appropriately.

Isolation, Air Filtration, and Containment

It is important that when mold is being removed, the area be properly isolated and contained. The purpose behind this step is to take action to avoid spreading the mold to other areas of the home. Isolation and containment involve separating the contaminated area from any other areas for the duration of the work.

Another element here is to make sure the area being remediated and restored has appropriate air filtration. This is for safe air movement in an isolated space, as well as for breathing safe air in an area that contains mold.

Remediation & Restoration

Once everything is prepped, it’s time to get rid of the mold. This process will depend on the mold and the company removing it. They will safely remove the mold and restore the space as well. The end goal is to return the space to the pre-loss condition before the mold existed there.

Finally, once they get the mold removed and get the area restored, the entire space needs to be cleaned and disinfected. A final inspection should be completed to be sure that all of the mold was effectively removed and cleaned up.
