There are many different types of mold that you might come across. Not all of them are dangerous, but many of them trigger allergies, asthma, and other health problems.
These are some of the most common types of mold found in homes and businesses.
Mold Categories
First, let’s talk about the different categories that can be found. This include:
- Allergenic: not toxic but could cause allergic reactions
- Pathogenic: may cause illness
- Toxigenic: contains toxins and could be deadly
While there are these three specific categories, there are many different species that fall into each one. In total, there are thousands of different mold species out there.
Types of Mold
Now, let’s get into the different types. Some of these are common and “harmless,” while others are toxic.
Chaetomium
This allergenic species often comes from homes that have experienced water damage of some sort. It could be from flooding or perhaps a leak, but this is the most common source.
This is one of the most common molds in homes, but it isn’t the only one. It starts out light in color, but darkens over time.
Stachybotrys
This is the dreaded black mold and it is toxic. It’s commonly found in areas that are excessively damp and can be found in air ducts and ventilation systems as well.
In most cases, moisture control can help prevent this species. However, if you have it, you absolutely want to get it handled right away.
Alternaria
This is another common household species, and it’s in the allergenic category. You are most likely to find Alternaria around windows that have dampness, as well as bathrooms or kitchens that aren’t well vented.
This particular type is known for causing hay fever and asthma issues, so be aware.
Ulocladium
This species can be confusing because it looks a lot like black mold, but it’s not. It is, however, still allergenic and known to cause a lot of allergy-type reactions.
It’s most commonly found in places in your home that are always wet for some reason or another. This might be the water tray on your fridge, the drywall or appliances in your bathroom, or even washing machines. If you see it, get it treated and get it out of there!
Aspergillus
This one is a pathogenic species. It can cause illness, but isn’t necessarily toxic on its own. The problem is that the lung infections, asthma, and other respiratory issues it can cause may lead to many more health problems.
This mold species is most commonly found in HVAC systems, but can be present in other places too. Most of the time, it takes root in a system or building where water damage has occurred.
Get Rid of Mold When You Find It
While not every single species is toxic, they all present their own form of danger. If mold is present, it can trigger allergy and asthma problems at the very least. Other kinds can be toxic and deadly. Don’t ever ignore it.
